USDOT (United States Department of Transportation) requires that a USDOT Number be applied to both sides of the vehicle. The numbers must be legible from 50 feet away during daylight hours, which means you must use an easily readable font and the letters should contrast sharply in color with the background on which the letters are placed. Many states have size requirements between 2 and 4 for the lettering. The decal or sticker must be applied directly to the vehicle (not on trailers, fuel tank covers, or other removable parts) and must be permanently attached.
